The Institute on Lake Superior Geology (ILSG) was founded in 1955 "to provide a means whereby geologists in the Great Lakes region may exchange ideas and scientific data; to promote better understanding of the geology of the Lake Superior region, and to plan and conduct geological field trips."

The 51st Annual Meeting will be held in Nipigon, Ontario from May 24 to 28, 2005 and be organized jointly by geologists from the Ontario Geological Survey and Lakehead University.

A first-time host, Nipigon is ideally situated for field trips and its location has allowed us to offer trips to areas that have not been formally visited before. The Nipigon area is underlain by rocks ranging in age from the Neoarchean to the Mesoproterozoic; a variety of Quaternary deposits overlie bedrock. A special session will coincide with the completion of the two-year Lake Nipigon Region Geoscience Initiative, which incorporated geological, geochemical and geophysical surveys to better understand the Nipigon Basin. Another ILSG first is the use of boats to access the offshore islands in Lake Superior near Rossport for a look at the stratigraphy on the northern flank of the Midcontinent Rift.

A list of oral and poster presentations will be posted once available. Please check for updates as they are posted. We hope to see you in May!
